Last week, we celebrated Harmony Week at Summerhill Park Kindergarten — a special time to recognise and honour the rich diversity of our community. Harmony Week is all about inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone, and we embraced these values with a celebration that was both meaningful and fun for our young learners.
To mark the occasion in a way that resonated with our 3 and 4 year old children, the Red Group held a Teddy Bear Picnic. Each child brought along their favourite soft toy from home, and together we explored the ideas of similarities, differences, and what it means to belong. The children enjoyed noticing how their toys were all different — in colour, size, and shape — but each one was special and loved. It was a gentle and age-appropriate way to begin conversations about diversity and inclusion.
Food also played a big part in our celebration. Families kindly contributed breads from around the world, from crusty French baguettes to soft Turkish pide, Indian roti, and more. The children loved trying the different types of bread and learning that something as simple as bread can look and taste different depending on where it comes from — just like people.
Our Teddy Bears Picnic was a joyful, delicious, and meaningful way to celebrate Harmony Week, and we thank all our families for helping make it such a special experience. It was a beautiful reminder that while we may all be different, we all belong.
